Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence, or loss of bladder control, affects millions of men and women. It is more common in women. The main symptom is the urge to urinate or urinating when not expected.

There are two types of urinary incontinence.

Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence is caused by weakening of muscles around the bladder. There are a few reasons why these muscles weaken. Weight gain, pregnancy, injury or vaginal deliveries are commonly associated with stress incontinence. This type of incontinence mainly occurs in younger women. It can be described as unexpected light urinating or slight leakage when you do things like run, sneeze or laugh.

Urge Incontinence/Overactive Bladder

If you experience a sudden onset for the need to urinate, but don’t make it to the bathroom in time, you may have urge incontinence.  This type of incontinence can be associated with larger leaks and streams of urine.

With overactive bladder, you have a sudden, frequent need to urinate. But not everyone with overactive bladder has incontinence. Many women are able to “hold it” until they get to the restroom. Instead of leaking urine, the big problem for them is the disruptive need to urinate more frequently than normal.
